Afghan war costs explode

Denmark’s Defence Minister Gitte Lillelund Bech (Lib) has reported to the Defence Committee that the overall cost of Denmark’s participation in the Afghan War in 2009 was at 2.327 billion kroner, or triple the 2007 cost of DKK 754 million.

The 2009 figure is an expression of a new accounting method used by the military. This includes not only wages and salaries, but also materiel depreciation and other variable and fixed costs in connection with Afghan operations, including compensation to the families of casualties.
