US Afghan plans pose Danish quandary

The future of Denmark’s force in Afghanistan is in the balance after disclosures that the United States military is calling for the British, and thus also implicitly the Danish contingent, to be re-deployed away from Helmand province to allow a unitary US command in the troubled Afghan province.

Sources in the Danish foreign ministry tell Politiken that US commanders have proposed that Britain’s 9,000 troops in Helmand should be re-deployed to Kandahar province to fill gaps caused by the withdrawal of Canadian forces. Denmark’s 700 troops in Helmand are closely integrated with the British contingent.
