There is just one year until the United States begins its withdrawal from Afghanistan, something the American commander General Stanley McChrystal reminded us about on our front pages the other day.
In so doing, he lent his own weight to President Obama’s decision last autumn when he announced the new American strategy, and sent a further 30,000 soldiers to Afghanistan in a final attempt to wrest the initiative from the Taleban.
