Half of the tattoos carried out in Denmark are done by amateurs who have no formal training, work in unhygienic conditions and use cheap equipment and toxic ink, according to Ekstra Bladet which adds that at least 15,000 Danes gamble with their health each year.
“Tattoos are ‘in’, so many more people have their tattoos done by amateurs. At least half of the tattoos currently done in Denmark are carried out by non-professionals and there can easily be about 2,000 of them across the country,” Prof. Jørgen Serup MD at Bispebjerg Hospital tells Ekstra Bladet.
