There are many reasons that three weeks before voting, the Democrats seem to be facing a thrashing in the US midterm elections.
On the face of it, it seems strange that the wave of enthusiasm that carried Barack Obama into the White House can dissipate in just under two years. But it is not unusual for an incumbent president to find it difficult to mobilise the electorate in midterm elections. And the situation in the United States is certainly not a typical one at the moment.
