The spokesman for Egypt’s Sheikh al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayyeb has confirmed that Foreign Minister Lene Espersen did not apologise for cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, as has been reported in the Egyptian media in the past couple of days.
Asked in an interview with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation whether Espersen had given a direct apology during her meeting in Cairo, el-Tayyeb’s spokesman replied ‘No’, adding: “There is a difference between regret and an apology. Unfortunately an imprecise translation has created some confusion.”
