EU ready for treaty amendment

EU leaders agreed after lengthy negotiations last night to reopen the Lisbon Treaty for a targeted amendment to address the issue of economic crises.

The decision comes following intransigent pressure from Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel to develop a permanent crisis mechanism that can save euro countries with economic problems. Discussions on another Merkel proposal – to temporarily withdraw voting rights from persistent budget sinner countries, were, however, postponed.
