Denmark has had its first case of infection with a New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) superbug, the likes of which have caused major concern in European countries as such bacteria are resistant to conventional antibiotics.
The patient concerned is a 57-year-old woman who was hospitalised in Bosnia-Herzegovina with blood poisoning in July. She was later transferred to Denmark where she had been living for some 15 years, according to a report on the case in The Lancet.
