Foreign Minister Lene Espersen has stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party, leaving the route clear for Justice Minister Lars Barfoed to take over the political leadership after his seemingly only rival candidate has withdrawn from the race.

The Conservative Party Parliamentary group meets at noon Friday to choose a new political leader to take over from Espersen, who announced yesterday on return to Copenhagen from a foreign visit that she is withdrawing from the chairmanship of the party.
