Human testing is to begin in March on a new tuberculosis vaccine that not only protects against contracting the illness, but can also be given to those already infected to prevent the illness breaking out. If all goes according to plan, the vaccine should be available in a decade.

The ability of the vaccine, which is called H56, to prevent those already infected from developing the disease, has not previously been achieved in a TB vaccine.
