Bus, garbage and airport baggage services are expected to be hit by strikes Thursday, the day after the LO trade union congress held a meeting with several thousand shop stewards to protest government plans to abolish early retirement.
The early retirement issue, however, is not the only one to have provoked the strikes. Other issues, such as a ceiling on the cost of unemployment re-training, a cut in the length of time unemployment benefits are paid and intervention in the collective bargaining process have incensed employees.
