Plans to strengthen European cooperation in economic policy are now moving so fast that they are overtaking Denmark’s opt-outs on the inside, according to Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen following a meeting with the European Parliament’s Liberal Group.
As a result, the prime minister is said to be considering whether to hold a snap referendum on Denmark’s opt-outs to the EU treaties as an early big bang plebiscite – to take all three issues – justice, defence and the euro at the same time and prior to Denmark taking over the rotating EU presidency in 2012.
