The Iranian Deputy Culture Minister Javad Shamaqdari has written to the Cannes Film Festival organisers deploring their recent decision to expel the Danish director Lars von Trier from the festival for his statements on Nazism.

The Tehran Times quotes Shamaqdari, himself a film maker, as saying in a letter to Cannes President Gilles Jacob: “Surely you remember that the Cannes Festival was established with the aim of struggling against fascists.”
