The European Commission says that a visit by a group of experts to Danish borders last week has not allayed its fears that Denmark’s phasing in of permanent customs controls at Danish borders runs contrary to the open-border Schengen Agreement.
''Unfortunately, the mission did not enable us to get adequate answers to our questions. There are persistent concerns about the compatibility of Denmark's strengthened internal control measures with the freedoms provided under the EU Treaty including the Schengen acquis,” says European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Cecilia Malmström in a statement released today.
