An unusually pessimistic report from the Defence Intelligence Agency (FE) says that Afghanistan will be unable to defend itself in 2014 when NATO forces plan to leave the country.
“After 2014 there will be a need for instructors, battle support groups and special forces,” the 2011 FE risk evaluation report says. It adds that while the western offensive has put pressure on the Taleban in some parts of the country “It is unlikely that rebel forces will have been definitively weakened in Afghanistan’s southern and eastern provinces prior to the end of 2014”.
