For each day that passes, Afghanistan is moving closer to the day when the Afghan government itself will be taking over responsibility for security in the country.
The process is already in full swing, and the Afghan government announced on Sunday that it will be taking over responsibility for another 18 regions, several of which include areas in which rebels operate. With this takeover, some 50 per cent of Afghans will be living in areas where their own government is responsible for security.
