In 2011, emergency duty doctors in the capital region issued 40,906 prescriptions for antibiotics purely on the basis of a telephone consultation, rather than actually seeing the patient, according to the head of the Duty Doctor Service in Region Copenhagen Jørgen Rem.
“This is against our rules. You do not prescribe antibiotics over the telephone unless you are sure it is conjunctivitis or cystitis. These are the only two conditions in which we can accept prescribing antibiotics over the phone,” Rem says of the 30 per cent of antibiotics diagnoses that were prescribed over the phone.
