One of the most complicated space projects ever has concluded successfully with the landing on Mars of the Curiosity probe after a nine-month, 570 million kilometre journey.
Coming in to Mars at a specific angle in order to prevent it burning up, the capsule, containing an inner capsule with a sky crane and the Curiosity mobile probe, parachuted down to the Mars surface, releasing the inner capsule some way above the surface. A sky crane then gently winched Curiosity to the surface, after which the winch system itself jetted off to crash elsewhere.
