The 2012 World Press Photo Contest was the 55th of its kind. Winners were selected from more than 100,000 images submitted to the panel by 5,247 photographers and 124 nationalities.
The press photo of the year was taken by Samuel Aranda of Spain. The photograph shows Fatima al-Qaws cradling her 18-year-old son Zayed who is suffering from the effects of tear gas after participating in a street demonstration, in Sanaa, Yemen .
