When Eske Willerslev was set to present his new research idea to an auditorium full of leading scientists at a conference in Germany in 2024, many found his thinking insane.

»It was like I was an alien who’d walked into the room. The whole mindset was so different from what they were used to that they just sat there with their mouths hanging open«, the professor recalls.
