A homeowner who loses a spouse is supposed to keep the tax discount, the law says. The Danish Property Assessment Agency is not following it.

The 74-year-old retired I.T. programmer Carsten Petersen, who lives in an apartment in Frederiksberg, lost his spouse in November 2023.
He inherited both the apartment and a small summer house. Under the law, he was also supposed to inherit the tax discount designed to protect homeowners from being taxed out of their homes when new, higher property assessments were introduced and the property-tax freeze was lifted in 2024, as agreed by a broad political majority.
