Springvandets kulturhistorie er omtrent 5000 år lang.

Fra praktiske om end æstetiserede foranstaltninger til vanding af haver eller tilførsel af drikkevand i det gamle Egypten, over den franske solkonges ejakulative magtdemonstrerende springvand i parken på Versailles og videre til de fjollede spektakler foran Bellagio Hotel i Las Vegas.
