Tens of thousands of additional deaths, hundreds of thousands evacuated from their homes amid widespread wildfires, record temperatures, dried-up rivers and heat waves that keep rolling over our fellow Europeans farther south.

The record heat, which would have been virtually impossible without our greenhouse-gas emissions, has left its mark on the summer for a majority of the continent’s residents. Now it is hitting their economies, too.
