Denmark lost 3–2 to Norway and once again fell short of completing a fine comeback. But the night’s most striking remark came from the captain, who questioned his own place on the team.
Pierre Emile Højbjerg could have answered in any number of ways. He could have skimmed the surface, fallen back on clichés, or filled the air with words that said very little, as so often happens when the mouth keeps moving but the mind is still reeling after another frustrating defeat for the national team.
But in the early hours of Friday, Denmark’s captain chose to kick the door wide open.
