Five of Bornholm’s seven libraries are set to close. The move has sparked strong reactions not only among local residents, but also among Danish writers, artists and other cultural figures.
Residents of Allinge, Gudhjem, Svaneke, Aakirkeby and Hasle on Bornholm will no longer be able to go to the library and borrow books in their own town. Five of Bornholm’s seven libraries are set to close under a political budget agreement for 2027 in Bornholm Regional Municipality.
Instead, people in the five towns will have to drive to the two remaining public libraries in Rønne and Nexø. For some, that could mean a trip of up to 25 kilometers.
