Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, the rectorate at Roskilde University in Denmark (RUC) summoned four of the university’s researchers to a highly unusual meeting.
One by one, the researchers were called into an office where the university director, Henrik Zobbe, was waiting with RUC’s chief legal counsel. They had printed out photos of 12 students who had taken part in an action at the university the month before. Under the name RUC Intifada, the students had tried to draw attention to the war in Gaza by running through the university’s corridors, drumming, and forcing their way into private offices. Hate-filled graffiti directed at Israel was also written on the university’s walls.
