All women who are pregnant or want to become pregnant should get vaccinated against coronavirus in order to reduce the risk of losing their unborn babies. This clear warning comes from The Danish Health Authorities and obstetricians in Denmark.
The warning comes after new documentation that significantly more pregnant women who had COVID-19 have lost their babies in recent months. From June to November last year, 1 unborn child died in the womb because its mother had COVID-19. In the same period this year, 11 babies died in the womb of their infected mothers.
»We are extremely worried about the significant increase in the number of babies that have perished in the womb because their mothers had a COVID-19 infection. That is why all pregnant women should get vaccinated as it reduces the risk of serious illness and death for the unborn baby«, said Annemette Lykkebo, chief physician and president of the Danish Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DSOG).
In the course of the last six months, 31 pregnant women in Denmark have become so ill from their COVID-19 infection that it had serious consequences for them or their babies. In 11 cases, the baby died in the womb or shortly after being born. 11 babies were delivered by Cesaeran section, most often in week 30-32 of pregnancy which is more than two months premature, compared to 3 in the same period last year. 14 mothers were in need of oxygen treatment while 7 pregnant women had to be transferred to an intensive care unit.
Of the 31 infected women, 2 were vaccinated.
