Ahmed Samsam represents everything that the government and pillar of society dislike: He is a convicted criminal with an immigrant background, prone to violence, loud, and takes off his dirty Nike shoes in the Supreme Court. Yet, it was Samsam who received a favorable ruling from the country’s highest court on Tuesday in what can surely be described as an extraordinary verdict.

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) and the Danish Defense Intelligence Service (FE) have been told by seven unanimous Supreme Court judges that they must acknowledge that Ahmed Samsam was a secret agent on trips to Syria in 2013 and 2014. During these trips, he provided information on Danish fighters in Syria for payment. As a consequence of the ruling, the two services have already issued a joint statement admitting that Samsam was their deployed eyes and ears in Syria.
