Om Politiken

On October the 1st 1884, Dagbladet Politiken was founded in Copenhagen by Viggo Hørup, Edvard Brandes and Hermann Bing. The circulation amounted to 2.000 copies a day, each at the price of 0.01 Euro.

In 1904 the tabloid Ekstra Bladet appeared for the first time as a special issue on the Japanese-Russian war.

In 1912 both newspapers were moved to the present location on Rådhuspladsen in Copenhagen.

On January the 1st 2003 the corporation merged with Jyllands-Posten and from the same date Politiken, Ekstra Bladet and Jyllands-Posten are published by JP/Politikens Hus Ltd.

Furthermore the former corporation – Politiken Newspapers Ltd – has been transformed into Politiken Holding Ltd.

Politiken Holding Ltd. owns 50 percent of JP/Politikens Hus Ltd.

The major stockholder in Politiken Holding Ltd. is Politiken-Fonden.

The principal goals of the foundation is the acquisition and possession of shares in the corporation Dagbladet Politiken thus securing the continuance of the daily Newspaper Politiken and its affiliated companies and enterprises in a healthy manner for business and finances.

Another goal of the foundation is the securing of Dagbladet Politiken being managed as independent, Radical-Liberal and Social-Liberal organs of Danish liberalism in full accordance with the traditions of Politiken.
