The Danish director Susanne Bier won Denmark’s third ever Oscar overnight in Hollywood when her film ‘In a better world’ (Hævnen) took the laurels for the best non English-language film.

“This is a real Oscar Mum and Dad. Thanks to the Academy. What an honour..” Bier said as she received the coveted Oscar statuette.

‘In a better World’ competed with four other nominees for the title: Biutiful from Mexico, Dogtooth from Greece, Outside the Law from Algiers and Incendies from Canada.

The award is the third time that Denmark has won the title of best non-English language film. Gabriel Axel won in 1988 for his film Babette’s Gæstebud and in 1989 Bille August won an Oscar for Pelle Erobreren.

In a better world is Bier’s 11th film and also won a Golden Globe in January.
