The Denmark Democrats want to ban puffer jackets at upper secondary schools because, the party says, they can signal a culture of dominance when worn especially by »immigrant boys«. Here, three high school students from ethnic minority backgrounds describe what it is like to find themselves at the center of the debate.

The boys in puffer jackets get their say: »My style has nothing to do with a culture of dominance«

It drew attention when Inger Støjberg used her party, the Denmark Democrats’, summer conference to turn high school students’ clothing into a political issue. The party proposed banning so-called »dominance puffer jackets« and caps at the country’s upper-secondary schools, and Støjberg did not mince words when explaining who the proposal is mainly aimed at:

»I think people know very well what this is about. It’s about the fact that there are a great many immigrant boys in particular who use their clothing to signal a culture of dominance. And that includes these black puffer jackets, which have in fact often been a matter of debate«, the party leader said.
