When Simply Red was at its best, lead singer Mick Hucknall’s voice felt like being wrapped in silk. His crystal-clear tone was the flame thousands had come to warm themselves by at Royal Arena on Wednesday night. The redheaded Brit’s voice cut through the audience’s hearts with a clear, soft slice. You might think Roberta Flack once sang ’Killing Me Softly’ just for him.

There is a particular devotion between Danish concertgoers and Simply Red. They play here regularly, but this tour marks a special anniversary, celebrating 40 years of a band that has turned gentle pop into a grand gathering point.
