I’ve been to karaoke once before, but never in the middle of a bright afternoon, never in my own city’s former main library – and certainly never in a room covered wall to wall in thick, leopard-print carpeting.

But here we are: a group of strangers who don’t know one another, and yet still let out little whoops through the opening rounds of Denmark’s karaoke championship. Some of the performers can sing; others … well. But the place is buzzing at one of the communal events that Roberta’s Society in Aarhus has built its name on.
