Never before have so many children in Denmark attended a special school or a special class in a public school, and it consumes a significant portion of the public school budget.

In 2024, 27.8 percent of public school expenditures were spent on special schools and special classes in public schools, compared to 24.1 percent in 2019. During the same period, the proportion of students in special education increased from 5.7 percent to 7.1 percent.
