A malicious portrayal of H.C. Andersen has dominated our perception of him for too long. A depiction of the world-famous author as sycophantic, vain, and constantly seeking the company of nobility and celebrities.

This is the opinion of Anne-Marie Mai, a literature professor at the University of Southern Denmark. She refers to the critic Georg Brandes’ words from 1900 about the fairy-tale poet behind ’The Ugly Duckling’ and ’The Snow Queen’.
