There’s poor cell service on the bus in the Czech Republic. Here, 34-year-old Kristian Martin Kjærsgaard sits surrounded by his 9th-grade students on a field trip in the mountains, among pine trees and rock formations in Cesky Raj nature park. They’re on an ’active trip’ chosen by the students and have just finished a cave expedition.

This scenario, Kristian Martin Kjærsgaard admits, was not exactly what the former tattoo artist envisioned when he changed direction and became a school teacher.
