The threat of H1N1, and the suggestion that one of the best ways to avoid contagion is hand-washing, has had the extra beneficial effect of decreasing the numbers of children admitted to hospitals with other complaints such as diarrhoea and general infections.

“We have seen a reduction in the number of admissions of about a third since the summer holidays. It’s difficult to prove, but we’re pretty sure that there is a link to the fact that children have learnt better hand hygiene,” says Chief Physician Poul Erik Kofoed of the Paediatric Department at Kolding Hospital.
