Several parties want to shut down the internship program, which they believe is agriculture’s shortcut to cheap labor. But on a farm near Næstved, foreign interns talk about returning home with new opportunities.

Curious calves keep an eye on Zokhiruddin Jololiddinov as he skillfully maneuvers a mini-loader through a thick layer of bedding, stops the vehicle, and sticks its forks into a giant hay bale, causing the hay to fall apart.

The 20-year-old man from Uzbekistan is one of four foreign interns at Salsbjerggård farm near Næstved, home to more than 1,000 light brown dairy cows. Additionally, there are four trained foreign employees.
