The Danish government’s plans to hold a referendum on opt-outs to European cooperation and the euro have been postponed due to Ireland’s rejection of the Lisbon Treaty – but Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen still sees the possibility of a plebiscite during his government term.
Fogh said that the Irish government was expected to announce its timetable for a new referendum at the December EU summit. If the Irish referendum were to be held in the autumn of 2009, a referendum in Denmark could be on the cards.
