As Denmark awaits clearer indications of whether Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen actually is a candidate for the secretary-generalship of NATO, Turkey’s views about the Danish prime minister appear increasingly important.

Three incidents in particular have caused relations to cool: the road to Turkish membership of the European Union, the issue of Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, and a controversial news conference in Copenhagen which saw Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan refusing to take part due to the presence of a Kurdish television station.
