JPMorgan Chase has put a claim on De bocht van de Herengracht (The Bend in the Herengracht), a painting by Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde from around 1672, according to the de Volkskrant newspaper. The painting is part of the collection of Dutch investor Louis Reijtenbagh, who used it as collateral to secure a 50 million dollar loan from the bank in 2006.
It was bought by the Netherlands for its national gallery the Rijksmuseum in September 2009. Now that Reijtenbagh is unable to repay his loan, the bank has claimed the Berckheyde as well as Reijtenbagh's entire art collection, which includes works by Rembrandt, Modigliani, Van Dongen, Giacometti, Monet and Picasso.
