One of the most foolish aspects of our modern food culture is that you can get strawberries year-round. It doesn’t matter if it’s June or January. The red berries are stacked up in everything from discount stores to supermarkets. Tasteless, half-hard, and a representation of what’s wrong with our demand-and-supply society.
A few years ago, DR investigated where the foreign strawberries come from and could reveal that they are primarily grown in Spain on large intensive farms that require a high water consumption. This means nature reserves the size of Lolland are threatened with drying up because the strawberries absorb so much water.
